What is Qigong?

Qigong...
...is a holistic system of self-healing exercises and meditation, rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This ancient, evolving practice combines healing postures, movement, self-massage, breathing techniques, and meditation. The goal is to accumulate and store Qi (vital energy) in the body, much like filling a reservoir. Impure or stagnant Qi, which is thought to cause illness, can be cleansed and refined into pure, healing energy. Qigong's aim is to eliminate impure Qi.
Qigong is more than 4,000 years old...
In most forms of Qigong:
-
Breath is slow, long, and deep.
-
Breath patterns may switch from abdominal breathing to breathing combined with speech sounds.
-
Movements are typically gentle and smooth, aimed for relaxation.
-
Mind regulation includes focusing one’s attention and visualisation.

Qigong follows traditional Chinese medicine principles, which claim that qi flows through our bodies. According to TCM, people tend to feel their best when qi travels freely, but health and psychological issues can crop up if the energy becomes stagnant or blocked in a certain area of the body. Through simple poses and patterned breathwork, qigong helps to remove obstacles to promote a healthy flow of Qi.
